Betting guide to World Cup 2018 | Group Stages

Group A Betting guide

Egypt

Russia

Saudi Arabia

Uruguay

Group A has the hosts Russia and two-time winners Uruguay as the seed teams and middle-eastern powerhouse Saudi Arabia and north African Egypt.

Both Uruguay and host Russia are overwhelming favourites to go through to the knockout stages. Russia, however, have failed repeatedly to make an impact in recent tournaments and are only fancied to through because they are the host.

Egypt have been on a recent uptrend and with their star man in scintillating form for Liverpool, much is expecting of them.

Saudi Arabia have made the finals of the tournament a few times now and apart from scoring the odd memorable goal they’ve made a negligible impact on the tournament.

Group B Betting Guide

Iran

Morocco

Portugal

Spain

Group B has the 2010 winners Spain and the current European champions Portugal as the seeded team. North African side Morocco and the Persian team Iran make up the group.

Group B may be on course to see the least goals in the group stages of a world cup with ultra-defensive such as Iran, Morocco and Portugal.

Spain are overwhelming favourites to win the group along with Portugal. I really can’t see either Iran or Morocco making any impact unless something horribly goes wrong for both Spain and Portugal.

Both Spain and Portugal should go through, and winner of the group could well be decided on goal difference. Spain for me are a more rounded team with quality all over the pitch whereas Portugal are skewed by their star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Group C Betting guide

Australia

Denmark

France

Peru

Group C has 1998 winners France, Denmark, Australia and Peru. While France look obvious group winners with the amount of talent they have at their disposal, predicting the second place is not so straight-forward.

Denmark have a few notable players who could help them qualify but in recent tournaments, they haven’t really made much impact. Peru are relative newcomers to the elite tournament football having qualified for the time in generations.

Australia, however, have been in the last few tournaments but have not been able to the kind of impact that would make others take notice. This time, however, I think the draw has been favourable and they could spring up a few surprises.

Group D Betting Guide

Argentina

Croatia

Iceland

Nigeria

Group D has the potential winners Argentina, Croatia, Iceland and African powerhouse Nigeria. Argentina are the overwhelming favourites to win the group with the bookies and with good reason too when you look at their talent pool.

Croatia are a very good tournament team who seem to always perform to a decent standard and give anyone game.

Iceland were the surprise package a few years ago when they knocked out England out of the tournament. But have they got it in them to pull off similar herculean efforts again? I don’t think so.

Nigeria are an anomaly, they have talent all over the pitch, but you never know what you are going to get from them. They could overpower a team or go out of the tournament without a whimper.

As I wrote in a post earlier, I think Argentina will win the world cup 2018, but I don’t expect it to be straightforward, in fact, I’m not even expecting them to win their group.

Group E Betting Guide

Brazil

Costa Rica

Switzerland

Serbia

Group E hosts the record winners Brazil along with Costa Rica, Switzerland and Serbia. For obvious reasons, Brazil is the bookies favourite to win the world cup.

They have a great settled squad and have talented players in all areas, but they are relying on Neymar for star power which in the past was all over the Brazilian teams. Whether Neymar can sprinkle his undoubted magic and lead his nation to glory remains to be seen and I remain a sceptic.

The three other nations in group E are evenly matched, they are all well-organised teams who play who will perform well if not spectacularly. Switzerland may just have the shade on the other two nations but we’re really splitting hairs here.

Group F Betting Guide

Germany

South Korea

Mexico

Sweden

Group E host the current champions Germany along with South Korea, Mexico and Sweden. Like so many of the groups in this world cup group has a similar tale of one dominant team along with three other evenly matched teams.

Germany is obvious favourites to win the group and are the second favourite to retain their crown from 2014. While some notable players have retired from the national team, there still is a similar look and feel to the German national side.

They still play the same high energy football they did in 2014 and they still deploy the same system as they did in 2014. Whether they will be found out or not remains to be seen, but one thing for sure, the Germans will not give up their crown easily.

The three other countries that makes up group F look rather lightweight. South Korea are regular participants now but have yet to make any improvements on their momentous achievement of reaching the semis at their home tournament in 2002.

Mexico also are a regular participant in the world cup finals thanks largely to a relatively easy qualify region.

Sweden are the surprise participant here. Their final qualifying game was Italy, and few gave them any hope of seeing off the 4 times world cup winners, but somehow, they made it, even without their retired talisman Ibrahimović.

Both Mexico and South Korea look rather lightweight against Sweden, and with a renewed tenacity and solid look to them, I’m confident Sweden can see off the more flamboyant Mexico and the more energetic South Korea.

Group G Betting Guide

Belgium

England

Panama

Tunisia

Group G look a lot like a traditional world cup group, we have two powerhouse teams with two unknown quantities. England and Belgium are the obvious favourites in this group, the two other teams have little or no chance of causing an upset here. The only question here is who will top the group?

Both Belgium and England have a similar trajectory in the recent tournaments, they both look good going into the tournament but fail to play to their potential and crash-out without making any significant impact on the tournament.

England have been quietly improving under new manager Gareth Southgate, but they still have all their old problems. England are a decent team when team when the game is played at their pace, increasing it’s becoming slower, and they don’t have any noticeable game plan other to make-it-up as they go. This kind of gameplay might get you through qualifying groups which are littered with minnows but at the finals, they will surely come unstuck.

Belgium have a wealth of talent all over the pitch, some have even called it their golden generation. They have a world-class striker, a wealth of talented midfielders and some solid defenders and goalkeeper isn’t that bad either. Belgium will certainly do well in this tournament, whether they make any dent into the real boy’s ambition is still doubtful, however.

Group H Betting Guide

Colombia

Japan

Senegal

Poland

Group H sees four teams from four different continents with Colombia from South America, Japan from Asia, Senegal from Africa and of course Poland from Europe.

While Colombia is the top-seeded team, all four teams look on paper evenly matched. Colombia will be the favourites to win the group but both Poland and Senegal are equally well equipped to give then good competition.

Japan have qualified regular from the Asia region but have yet to make many inroads into the latter stages. Poland have improved in recent years all be it in very incremental stages.

Senegal, however, has a real chance to make some serious inroads in this tournament. They have a wealth of talents all over the pitch and have real power and strength in their team that can subdue the best of teams. They also seem to have finally settled on an effective playing style them lends to their power in their teams.
