Match Preview

There are lots of teams that get labelled as the “golden generation”, this Belgium team however fully deserves that title. The depth of quality in this current Belgium side is simply astonishing, from the goalkeeper to goal scorers, Belgium have world class players players in almost all positions and most of them are in the peak of their careers.

This World Cup then is the best chance Belgium have had to win major international honours or at least go very close. Their form coming into the World Cup certainly suggests they’re on the cusp of something special, Belgium haven’t lost a game since a narrow defeat to Spain in September 2016.

Panama are unknown quantity at this level, this is their first ever appearance at the World Cup level. There isn’t much to suggest they could spring up any surprises, they’ve lost most of their recent games and lack any player of note, none of their players play in the top leagues of European football. Panama will be happy just to be part of the biggest sporting event in the world, they could turn out to be the whipping boys of the tournament.

Belgium are a team that punish poor sides, they’re not the kind of team who just try to hold on after going ahead in games. This game could prove to be a very good start for Romelu Lukaku who has scored 14 goals in his last 10 games for Belgium, and with a wealth of other attacking players in the Belgium side looking to open their account in the World Cup, this could be a heavy defeat for Panama.
